Wondering what you get when you open up your first H.E.A.D. Hunters figure? In addition to the vinyl toy, you are equipped with two Battle Platforms, Combat Dice, a Measuring String, Health and Terrain cards, and each individual H.E.A.D. Hunters figure comes with their own unique deck of 36 hexagonal cards. These are fully illustrated and feature artwork specific to each character. There are 4 basic types of cards in the deck. These consist of Attack, Defense, Move, and Special. It’s important to note that there are other card types, these are just the most common.
There are two different types of Attack cards – Melee and/or Ranged. These are meant to wound the opponent. These are also some of the most common cards that you will play. Defense cards are played face down, lying in wait to be used in combat at your discretion.
Movement cards offer you more options than a basic “move” action, and some even grant abilities such as Leap (jump over another character) or Flight (fly over terrain). Lastly, Special cards are ones that have a wide range of effects that can be activated on use.
The characters’ decks are broken down into 6 groups, called Pods. Each pod is made up of 6 cards. These pods are PRIMARY ATTACK, SECONDARY ATTACK, WEAPON, DEFENSE, MOVE and SPECIAL. Every card is titled with a name plate, and is marked with an icon that signifies which pod it belongs to. There is also a tag describing what type of card it is.
So what does each individual Pod contain? H.E.A.D. Hunters cards are distributed in different levels of frequency. The most common type is an ORDINARY card, which is identified by three small emeralds placed at the bottom of its nameplate. There are 3 ORDINARY cards per pod. The next level of card is the REMARKABLE card. These cards are marked with two rubies. There are 2 REMARKABLE cards in each pod. The last, and most scarce of the cards, is the EXCEPTIONAL card. These are marked with a single large Diamond. There is only one EXCEPTIONAL card per pod.
Once you are familiar with the cards that have come with your H.E.A.D. Hunters figure, you’re ready for the next exciting aspect of the game – DECK BUILDING! First you must decide which figure you want to use. Note that you must use the Health cards and Starting Terrain for your chosen figure. Once you have done that, collect your cards. You will observe that the number of gems marked on each card represents the number of copies each pod should contain. These cards must stay together. You have to use every card from a pod or none at all.
You will need to have one of each of the 6 pods in your deck. Any ofthe pods can be used from and with any of the H.E.A.D. Hunters figures – with the exception of the SPECIAL pod. You must use the SPECIAL pod that corresponds with your selected figure.
Once you get the hang of the cards and the system, you’ll be building your own custom deck in no time!
